Between heaven and earth at more than 700 metres in height, built on a rocky spur of Vosges, the Castle of Haut-Koenigsbourg guards the plain of Alsace for the XIIth century. Set up by the duke of Bavaria Frédéric le Borgne, guard of the stairs of the Saint empire, the castle becomes property of the dukes of Lorraine in the XIIIth century then that of the bishop of Strasbourg.

In December in Strasbourg is above all an immense market of Christmas. In 1570, under the influence of the Protestantism of Strasbourg while fighting against "extravagant" tradition Catholics who became attached in the name of the saints, who "Christkindelsmärik" (the market of the child Jesus) replaces the market of Saint Nicolas.
